Wrap up?

Honestly, after reading two of Burroughs' pieces, I don't find myself as a huge fan of his writing, nor his personality.

Nice and simple to read
Insightful and descriptive
Personal, had a very strong voice
Broken down into small stories

But...

Don't really see his overall message (probably my problem)

1-10 scale on his books
7

I see my author Augusten Burroughs as a sensitive, perceptive, imaginative, different, and personal guy. He doesn't seem motivated or have a real goal in life, he just seems to go with whatever life is giving him, and he does silly and unnecessary things and fool around a little bit in life, he seem just like the "Laters" in the mid-term essay.

He better not read my blog like Heba's author...

Magical Thinking vs Possible Side Effects

So my reading list consist of two books, "Magical Thinking" and "Possible Side Effects".

Both books are composed of stories in Burroughs' life, I thought "Magical Thinking" went more in depth with his mind. It was strictly thoughts and emotions, and it really focused on his relationships and sex life. Also, the book contained many imaginations and fantasies, such as dreaming to be a transexual, and believing that his parents stole him from the Vanderbilts.  Maybe that is why the title of the book is called "Magical Thinking"! He is always thinking about dreams and fantasies. (Very very inappropriate to read)

On the other hand, "Possible Side Effects" focused more on facts, it concentrated on what happened to Burroughs' in different stories, and it had almost nothing about his relationship and sex, it was an appropriate book, unlike "Magical Thinking".

I enjoyed "Magical Thinking" more despiteit's explicit contents, because the book was insightful about Burroughs' mind and perception. Therefore, it was a bit more personal than "Possible Side Effects", which made me want to read it more. Also, it revealed the "whole" Burroughs, because I felt that "Possible Side Effects" didn't illustrate all sides of Augusten Burroughs.

Disturbing things about Burroughs

Honestly, I am getting a bit disturbed by the explicit details of the book "Magical Thinking". Burroughs' narration has a strong sense of femininity, he is very sensitive and skeptic about everything.
What disturbs me is the sexual phrases and words that he uses in the book. There is something "dirty" involved in every story, whether it is his thoughts or his actions. He describes his sexual intercourse in a very detailed way with is boyfriends and he sexually harassed a telemarketer on the phone by asking for his nude picture. There are much more to it, and I am really trying to avoid putting anything inappropriate in my bibliography quotes and blogs. Burroughs does not hold back on his writing at all, he is willing to share whatever he experienced, regardless of the contents.
Now I am starting to find Burroughs as a humorous writer,

"You kick me one more time you little cocksucker, and once we get on the boat, I'll push your mother into the ocean, and she'll die. And then I'll hurt your daddy. And then I'll be your new daddy, and I'll take you home with me."

More about Burroughs

Apparently, Augusten Burroughs is considered as a pretty handsome guy,

“I was very tall, skinny, and had thick, wavy blond hair: all the qualities that ninety-nine-point-nine percent of the female population equate with beauty.”

He attended modeling school at the age of FOURTEEN! I think some people would see this man as weird others see him as unique, but he is certainly different from the general population.

He had more disgusting things to say, which reveals about his personality, but I rather not quote him because it lacks appropriateness. But just note that he is pretty feminine inside.

So far, he has provided several stories about his life, and every story contain very personal details( such as his homosexuality) , and he doesn't hold back at all. Burroughs don't seem to care about how readers might perceive him, he demonstrates bravery in revealing everything about his life to inform and entertain readers, despite the fact that readers can be very judgemental and critical these days.

About Burroughs

As a seven years old boy, Burroughs show a sign of his interest in the same gender,

"Something about the presence of the men made both Mrs. Ames and me turn red and become hot."

"As I was watching him he caught my eye and smiled. I thought he was a very friendlyl man, very nice. I admired his crisp dark suit, white shirt, and black tie. His hair was athick and glossy, combed back. I smiled at him. He nudged his friend and nodded in my direction, and then the other man looked at me. He smiled, too."

Check this

"I wanted to jump up out of my seat and run to the men, hugging them around the legs. I wanted to lick the hair on their wrist."

As I was researching, I found out for a fact that Augusten Burroughs is homosexual, and he seem to focus on his homosexuality a lot throughout this book. His writing may be slightly disturbing to read sometimes, but easy to understand. His collection of personal stories "Magical Thinking" reveals every stage of his life. The first several stories in the beginning talks about his memerable experiences at his early ages, every first sentence or paragraph of his story begins with "When I was seven years old" or "When I was in fourth grade". So he clearly states how old he was in each story.

Extra STUFF

Interview

Augusten Burroughs

Honestly, I picked Augusten Burroughs(Christopher Robison) because he was the first memorist suggested by Mr. Walsh. Also he is a number one selling author with Running with Scissors, Dry, Magical Thinking, Sellevision and Possible Side Effects. His New York Times best selling is his memoir "Running with Scissors". I think the writings of such a author should be more interesting, hopefully, I haven't done enough research about him yet, so I can't tell. The main subjects of his writings are memoir and humor, so it should be somewhat funny. I am pretty sure that his pieces focus on his family a lot as well.
